Imo introduces weekly agric programme for civil servants, reduces working days to 3 per week

The government of Imo State has introduced a policy tagged “BACK TO LAND FOR AGRICULTURE” to enable the state engage and invest heavily in agriculture for self-sustenance since from all indications, the state can no longer depend on monthly allocation from the federal government for survival.
Against the backdrop, the governor directed that public servants in the state would now work from Mondays to Wednesdays, and use Thursdays and Fridays for agriculture (farming) while Saturdays can be used for ceremonies. And the directive takes effect from Monday August 1, 2016.

He disclosed this when Traditional Rulers from the state operating under the aegis of ‘Royal fathers in Agriculture’ paid him a courtesy call at the Government House Owerri yesterday, adding that the State Executive Council has given approval to the new policy.

However, the governor exempted public servants on essential duties like the teachers, nurses, doctors and people involved in Internally Generated Revenue drive. Political appointees are also exempted from the three-days working periods.

The governor added “we shall try this programme for the period of one year, starting from 1st of August 2016 and hopefully this will help. Let me make this emphasis before it is misconstrued or misrepresented that this does not in any way affect the salaries of the workers. Workers will get their full salaries. So the policy does not mean that there will be a cut in salary rather let us now find a way for our workers to supplement their salaries”.

He continued “for this reason the issue of annual leave and casual leave is hereby cancelled. Resumption time for work has changed from 8am to 7.30am in the morning and ends by 4pm. Any worker that is not found on his or her seat between 7.30am and 4pm on the days concerned will be summarily dismissed”.

“Everybody must go back to agriculture. Every political appointee must own a farm. The youths would also be encouraged to take to agriculture. Schools including Universities, Polytechnics and Secondary schools in the state must own farms. The Community Government Council (CGC) must be strengthened for the sake of this agricultural programme”.

“Two billion naira (N2b) has been set aside at the micro-finance bank for the purpose of this Back To Land For Agriculture policy so that those willing can access it. And time is gone again when politicians and some Imolites will come to government in the pretext of farming and collect loans and use it to buy cars and marry new wives”.

“Again, the June and July Salaries would be paid this week. We are making sure that our workers are comfortable and our pensioners are happy because this is one area the whole nation is having a serious challenge. Our problem is not being unable to pay salaries but paying over-bloated salaries. We are also making effort to pay our pensioners once the harmonization is over”.

“I also want to announce that government has appealed to families and those who organize burials on Mondays to Wednesdays to please change and have their burials on Saturdays so that we can concentrate on the government’s work and on the agricultural programme.

“Everything that has to do with agriculture no matter what shape it comes, government will support it. So many countries are going through economic crisis because of the fall in oil. Our nation is also going through very difficult moment. We have taken responsibility as leaders and we are not blaming anyone. Wise nations and leaders save for the rainy days. There were periods the oil price was in our favour. But those in charge then blew the money. They made no savings. Today the oil price globally has crashed and here we are. And we must fall back to agriculture as the panacea” Governor Okorocha stated.

In his speech at the victory party, Governor Okorocha thanked the electorate in Okigwe Senatorial Zone, Oru-East and Owerri West State Constituencies for voting the candidates of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
He said the victory of the APC in the re-run poll for Okigwe senatorial zone is a victory for the whole of South-East APC in particular and the people of the geo-political zone in general, adding that  all the National Assembly members from the state on the platform of PDP should be re-called to come and face proper election because none of them won in the last general elections held in 2015
Speaking further at the occasion, Governor Okorocha commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for ensuring a free and fair election and thanked all the security agencies who worked to ensure that the people’s votes counted.

Okigwe re-run elections: Okorocha warns against thuggery, rigging

On Saturday, July 23, 2016  the people of Okigwe zone will be voting to elect their Senator, while the people of Oru-East and Isiala Mbano state constituencies will be voting to elect their representatives into the state House of Assembly in the re-run election to be conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
It will be recalled that the Appeal court cancelled the previous Senatorial election held last year in Okigwe zone as well as that of Oru-East and Isiala Mbano state constituencies  hence the need for INEC to re-conduct the elections.
Against the backdrop of this electoral development, the state Governor Owelle Rochas Okorocha, as a matter of responsibility and unbridled concern wishes to appeal to the people of the state in general and people of Okigwe Zone and the two State Constituencies in particular to ensure peace and also display avowed patriotism.
Already, the state governor has, to a very large extent, charged the superintending agency, INEC and all the security agencies deployed for the election to ensure the security of lives and property, and to also ensure free and fair election.
What this action portends is that there will be no room for thuggery and there will be no room for rigging. These Imo vices will be grossly resisted, and anybody caught doing any of them will have himself or herself to blame. A word is enough for the wise.
Parents are therefore advised to guard against their children or wards being recruited to work as thugs, because anyone caught in that act will live to regret it. The people’s votes in these re-run polls must count. Both thuggery and rigging have become outfashioned and they would not be allowed to surface in the Saturday’s election.
The compound interest of the governor in the whole exercise is to ensure that those elected by their people at the polling units or through the ballot boxes will be declared winners. This is not negotiable. What is worth doing is worth doing fine.
The traditional politicians or political leaders who have so much believed in thuggery and rigging as the only ways to win election over the years should better drop the idea because they will never be allowed to do that. One wishes they take this candid advice.
And owing to the importance the government attaches to the re-run – election, Friday, July 22, 2016 has been declared work-free day to enable indigenes from the affected areas to go and exercise their franchise and elect those who would represent them.
The governor prays that God would continue to bless the state and her people and has also urged all those who will vote on Saturday not to let patriotic citizens of the state down.

Meanwhile, the support base of the APC candidate in the rescheduled election, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Uwajumogu, seems to have swollen across social strata and political party lines.
This time, notable Igbo leaders across political and religious dividends have called on the good people of Okigwe zone to ensure the emergence of the former Imo Assembly Speaker to further enhance the propagation of the Igbo cause.
Some of the leaders who bared their minds at the sidelines of the unity meeting of Igbo leaders which took place at the Imo International Convention Centre, IICC, Owerri, described the forthcoming rescheduled election in Okigwe zone as very strategic to the welfare of Ndigbo in the present political dispensation in the country.
One of them, Chief Azuka Okwuolisa, regretted that Ndigbo had remained behind the driver's seat in the political equations of the country since the present administration came on board, owing to what he called "our myopic mistake" during the 2015 general elections.
According to him, "Our people must know that power is taken and not given. We must acknowledge the fact that we made a myopic mistake. As such, we must do everything within our powers to right the wrongs of yesterday to relaunch our political will back to the epicenter of governance in this country".
He noted that the lot seems to have fallen on the shoulders of the Okigwe people to redeem Ndigbo in its current political quagmire.
Chief Okwuolisa, enjoined the people of Okigwe zone to shun political party sentiments and vote for the total emancipation of the South east in view of the country's political stance by overwhelmingly queuing behind the APC candidate, whom he said possesses the will to fight for his people.
In a related development, the council of Traditional rulers in Okigwe zone, have thrown their weight behind the candidature of the former Imo Assembly Speaker in the July 23 rescheduled polls.
Chairman of the council and the paramount ruler of Ihim autonomous community, HRM Eze Matthew Oweni, who dropped this hint in an interview with Journalists, described Rt. Hon. Benjamin Uwajumogu, as the true son of Okigwe zone who has paid his dues for the positive advancement of the area.
He added that the council of Traditional rulers of the zone, after painstaking observations of the two leading candidates in the rescheduled polls, endorsed the APC candidate for his pragmatic approach exhibited in tackling the multifarious challenges confronting his people.
Eze Oweni, who conveyed the resolutions of the royal fathers in Okigwe zone, urged the PDP candidate in the re-run to show understanding and patriotism for the cause of Ndi-Okigwe by supporting his brother (Uwajumogu) in other to move not only Okigwe zone forward but Imo state in general.
He however called on the people of the zone to respect the wise decisions of the royal fathers and rally-round the APC candidate in his quest to better the lots of his people.

Officials of NIS Zone E Command pay courtesy visit to Gov Okorocha

The Zone E Command of the Nigeria Immigration Service, comprising 6 states within the South South and South East of Nigeria led by Assistant Controller General of Immigration, A. W Gambo was at the Government House, Owerri yesterday to rub minds with the state governor.

Speaking during the visit, the ACG thanked Governor Okorocha for his magnanimity to the command and donation of vehicles amongst others. He called for information on illegal immigrants in the zone and called for high security consciousness amongst the populace.
In his response, Governor Rochas Okorocha thanked the delegation for their visit and described the immigration service as the mirror with which the outside world sees Nigeria. He said Nigeria cannot be a dumping ground for criminals and called for vigilance especially in this season of militancy and terrorism.

The governor was accompanied by his Principal Secretary, Dr Pascal Obi; Deputy Chief Of Staff, Domestic and Internal Affairs, Mrs Ogechi Ololo; Commissioner for Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and Internal Resources, Mr. Ifeanyi Araraume Jnr. and other government functionaries.

Governor Okorocha reshuffles cabinet, reassigns four commissioners

The governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha on Monday, July 18, 2016 carried out minor cabinet reshuffle that occasioned some Commissioners being moved to other ministries.
For instance, the Commissioner for Information, Strategy, Youths and Sports, Engineer Chidi Ibeh was moved to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, while Hon. Ifeanyi Ararume Junior who was in that ministry was moved to the Ministry of Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and Internal Resources.
The Commissioner for IGR Chief Vitalis Ajumbe was moved to the Ministry of Information, and Public Utility, while Hon. Rodney Ajaelu now takes charge in the ministry of youths, sports and public safety.
And the minor reshuffle was not for any other reason but for strategic reasons and optimum productivity on the parts of the individual commissioners. They had all done well in their former ministries and the Governor in his wisdom believed that they could do better in their current portfolios.
The truth is that none of them was shifted for non-performance as being rumoured in some quarters. They have all been outstanding in the discharge of their responsibilities and the governor had had the feeling that they could do more in their new ministries.
The governor therefore wishes the concerned Commissioners success in their new ministries.

It will be recalled that prior to this minor cabinet reshuffle, Ministry of Commerce and Industry was referred to as Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism while Ministry of Information, Tourism and Public Utilities was referred to as Ministry of Information, Youth and Sports.
Ministry of Youth and Sports is now restored with responsibility for Public Safety with the full acronym, Ministry of Youth, Sports and Public Safety.
The reassignment takes immediate effect.
