Governor Okorocha in a group photograph with Anglican bishops.....................
The Anglican Bishops of the Ecclesiastical province of
Owerri(Anglican Communion) led by the Most Reverend Bennett Okoro (PhD) have
expressed gratitude to Governor Rochas Okorocha for introducing free education
in Imo State and also for upholding the return of schools to the various
churches whose schools were taken over by the Ukpabi Asika Government in 1970.
Responding to the address read by the Most Reverend,
Governor Okorocha said that the church serves as an instrument through which
the oppressed are pacified in times of trouble. In his words, “the church is a
bridge between the government and the governed and it is the only institution
that serves to pacify the masses in times of crises”.
Speaking further at the meeting held at the Sam Mbakwe
Expanded EXCO Chambers today, the governor described his election into office as
a stepping stone to a greater position in the near future. He reminded the
visiting clergy men of the events that led to his emergence as governor, adding
that he was aspiring to become the president of the federal republic of Nigeria
before he was called to come home and rescue the people of Imo State from the
forces of oppression and retrogression.
He expressed his readiness to partner with the church in
ensuring that a proper moral upbringing of the citizens of Imo State,
especially the youths, is adequately taken care of. In addition, the governor
used the occasion to render an account of his stewardship in office in the last
one year which includes the completion of about 365 projects.
The highpoint of the occasion is the passionate request by
the governor to the clergy men to assist him in educating the people of Imo
State on the benefits of the Fourth Tier Government which is about to commence
in the State.
Earlier in a speech, the leader of the group, Most Reverend Bennett
Okoro congratulated the governor for his victory in the last gubernatorial
election in Imo State and asked him to set a machinery in motion aimed at transferring
the responsibility of payment of teachers’ salaries to the State government.
Dignitaries present at the meeting include the Special
Adviser on Chaplaincy to the governor, Pastor Bunmi Babs, the Chief of Staff,
Government House, Owerri, Prince Eze Madumere, the Imo State Commissioner for
Special Duties, Dr Ifeanyi Nwachukwu and a host of others.
